back to balance pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates, or Contrology as it was first called by its inventor Joseph Pilates, is a holistic exercise system that aims to restore balance, improve alignment and promote good movement patterns as well as enhance mental awareness.

The Pilates system is about more than just building a strong core or perfect posture (although they are certainly among the benefits) but is designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance by using small deep muscles and concentrating on the flow and precision of each movement.

Exercises involve the whole body and are performed on a mat, sometimes utilising small equipment or on spring-assisted apparatus in a studio setting.

Benefits of Pilates
  • improved posture
  • improved balance
  • increased muscle tone, strength and flexibility
  • increased joint mobility

'Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit,' Joseph Pilates.

About Katie of Back to Balance Pilates:
An English teacher for many years, I started practising Pilates after suffering several bouts of lower back pain. Having experienced the benefits myself, I decided to retrain as a Pilates instructor and completed my training with one of the UK's most respected teacher training organisations The Pilates Foundation.

I offer group classes at both beginner and intermediate level and private classes for one or two participants by arrangement.
